“The Office - but in space”
The creators of “The Squadron” had a loosely defined vision for their set. They wanted a blend between an ultra-modern spacecraft and a “WeWork” office. Concept imagery was key to defining a vision that fit the narrative and tone, was achievable within their budget, and allowed them to shoot an entire series in a single, cramped, set space. Live presentations with 3D Sketchup models, Isometric drawings, and realistic V-Ray Renders were integral to both establishing a visual concept for discussions with stakeholders and key creative leads, as well as serving as a detailed reference for the build departments.
The Details:
The set was designed in three sections on rails and included numerous wilding panels, allowing the segments to be pulled apart for easy camera and crew access, as well as various “impossible” shots, making the space feel much larger than it was. Additional detailing included: All chairs on swivels and rails, wilding windows and wall panels, built-in LED lighting, operational airlock doors, a practical pneumatic tube system, and playback-ready consoles made with LED monitors mounted below sheets of optical acrylic, creating a seamless “touch screen” appearance.
